学校最早成立于1851年，是美国加州最早获得认可执照的大学 。学校一开始的名字叫做加州卫斯练学院（California Wesleyan College），1911年改名为太平洋学院（College of the Pacific）。在1962年和旧金山医学院（College of Physicians and Surgeons）合并，并且有了如今的名字。
